February 1: History and Culture Trail in Tallahassee: Innovative Approaches to Preserving Legacy Communities
The History and Culture Trail Project uncovers and celebrates the underrepresented history of some of the legacy African American communities in Central Tallahassee, FL. This session will share tips for centering diversity and inclusion in the project process, community engagement best practices, inclusive-oriented preservation, and grassroots research collection methods.
February 8: Historic Brownsville: Preservation + Land Use Policy in Miami-Dade County
Brownsville is a historically African American neighborhood in Miami-Dade County. This webinar will discuss the challenges between historic preservation planning for the neighborhood in light of County land use policy allowing increased intensity and density near public transit.
February 15: Planning with Gullah Geechee Communities in Northeast Florida
The Gullah Geechee people are descendants of Africans, many from West Africa, who were enslaved on plantations of the lower Atlantic coast. Many are familiar with this community and history related to South Carolina in particular, but less so with Northeast Florida. This webinar will discuss efforts to highlight, preserve and celebrate Gullah Geechee heritage in Jacksonville and Nassau County.
February 22: Florida Main Street and Historically Black Communities
The Main Street model is part of Main Street America that focuses on the economic health and viability of small towns, mid-sized communities, and urban commercial districts. This webinar will examine the program, introduce planners to the model, and highlight implementation in historically African American cities and districts in Florida.
