
Coastal Cultures Conference 2023
Join the leaders of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and the Gullah/Geechee Sustainability Think Tank in this interactive environmental conference centered on the indigenous environmental practices and cultural heritage of the Sea Islands of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.
Attendees will have the opportunity to tour historic St. Helena Island SC on the opening day and to engage in environmental sustainability projects on Saturday. The interactive educational circles and dialogues with environmental, ocean justice, governmental agency and academic partners will focus on:
• Self-Sufficiency and Self-Determination
• Agencies and Agency
• Advocacy & Allyship
• The Environment of Justice
• Creation & Collaboration
• Positioning Community in Policy
The event will close with a special BIPOC ONLY engagement session. Presenters will include members of the Ocean Justice Advisory Group and Gullah/Geechee Fishing Association and staff from the Ocean Conservancy, the Union of Concerned Scientist, Pew Charitable Trust, South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, the US Environmental Protection Agency and Creation Justice Ministries.
Registration includes Gullah/Geechee meals for Friday and Saturday.
Gullah/Geechee crafts and other items will also be on sale on Saturday.
