ABOUT FORT MOSE JAZZ & BLUES SERIES

To honor the history and celebrate the cultural significance of Fort Mose, the site of the first legally sanctioned free African settlement in what is now the United States, the annual Fort Mose Jazz & Blues Series welcomes renowned jazz and blues performances onsite at Fort Mose Historic State Park in St. Augustine, Florida. In February 2022, the inaugural series welcomed 3,000 attendees and raised over $50,000 for the Fort Mose Historical Society with performances by Gregory Porter, The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, and more. The Fort Mose Jazz & Blues Series is produced by St. Johns County Cultural Events, which operates The St. Augustine Amphitheatre and Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, with support from St. Johns County Tourist Development Council, St. Augustine Distillery, Fort Mose Historical Society and Flying Saucer Presents.
ABOUT FORT MOSE
Fort Mose is the site of the first legally sanctioned free African American settlement in what is now the United States. In 1738, an estimated 100 Africans made Fort Mose their home and sanctuary in seeking liberation from English enslavement amidst a large-scale power struggle between European powers in the New World. Pulling from Native American, Spanish and English cultural customs, the founding residents of Fort Mose created a new cultural community. In 1994, Fort Mose was designated as a Historic National Landmark.
