Meet the Players Championship at Ponte Vedra

I have been asked one question probably more than any other. What is the “McE.” for? (as in John McE. Miller). It is more than just letters to break up a generic name like John Miller! McE. is the way my family on my father’s father’s mother’s side abbreviate McElwee. My full name is John McElwee Miller. They were immigrants from Scotland and Northern Ireland who came to the new country and settled in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia and thereabouts.

The graveyard in Lexington, VA has many McE’s and McElwee’s carved onto the stones. Like so many, I am proud of my Scottish heritage. Especially at this time of year in Ponte Vedra, I like to think of Scotland’s contributions to the world like bagpipes, plaid, and of course, golf. With our office being located in Ponte Vedra, Home of the THE PLAYERS Championship, it is great to be able to welcome fans from around the world to The Players again this year.

Ponte Vedra’s golf tournament is arguably, the pre-imminent sporting event in all of the Northeast Florida. I have been fortunate to attend the event for many years. A couple of my favorite memories are: Jack Nicklaus leaving the fairway and crossing paths with me on his way to the public restroom. Talk about surreal! Another is the time that I saw Greg Norman sink a fairway iron shot from over 125 yards. The talent level is certainly extraordinary.
